Paper due dates

As I said in an e-mail earlier in the week, your second paper (the long one, which will be 8-10 pages) will be due on March 9, regardless of when you deliver your presentation on it.  I will not be reading drafts and returning comments as I did with the first papers, but you may ask me questions as you go along.

Your second paper must incorporate research drawn from at least two primary sources and three secondary sources other than (or in addition to) the texts in The Threshold of Democracy. Use footnotes to document your sources: each time you use a source you must give a footnote, even if you are paraphrasing rather than quoting the source.  That applies to primary as well as secondary sources.  You may use a bibliography page to list sources that inform your paper but were not incorporated directly enough to warrant a footnote.

Assignments for February 6 through 13.

On Monday, February 6, we will discuss all of chapter ten in Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing.  Be prepared to discuss the Singer article in detail.

On Wednesday, February 8, we will have a debate on Question #6 on p. 427, according to the roles handed out last time.  Your group should exchange ideas and possibly coordinate arguments in advance.  I have set up shared documents that you can use to conduct discussions, or you may do it by e-mail.

On Friday, February 10, we will begin talking about the Athens game. Read all of The Threshold of Democracy up to p 51.

On Monday, February 13, we will discuss Books I through III of Plato’s Republic, using the questions on pp. 34-35 of Threshold of Democracy.

On Wednesday, February 15, we will discuss Books IV and V of Plato’s Republic.

The Republic is a bit dense, so be sure to start reading before Sunday night.

Assignments for January 30 through Feburary 3 (obsolete)

For Monday, January 30.

Chapter 5: Read pp. 177-192, and the essays by Jacoby and Smith.  Prepare a brief (under 500 words) summary of the Jacoby article, and a response to question #7 on p. 225.  You will hand this in to me.

For Wednesday, February 1

Chapter 9: Read the entire chapter.  Be prepared to discuss the exercises on pp. 381-382 orally, and prepare a written response to the question on p. 392.  Use Google Docs to post this to the folder that I have shared with the class, entitled “Student Papers for HIS 230.”

You will be evaluating two other students’ responses to that question, using the checklist on p. 255.  I will tell you on Wednesday whose paper you will be evaluating.

For Friday, February 3

Turn in your evaluation of the two papers that you reviewed.  We will be discussing the first half of chapter 10, pp. 393-413.

Read chapters 6 and 7 by Wednesday, but we will not devote much (if any) time to discussing them in class.

Modification to first assignment

There is some redundancy in questions 1 and 2 on p. 29 of Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing, and so you may choose to answer one or the other, not both.

The odds are that we won’t get to Chapter 2 of Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing until Wednesday.  If so, I’ll collect your responses to the questions on pp. 71 and 72 then.
